Sony Swings to Big First-Half Profit on Video Games

Sony on Thursday posted a six-month net profit of almost $1 billion (roughly Rs. 6,520 crores), crediting its PlayStation video game unit and a weak yen for a big improvement in its finances as the company moves past years of losses.
The Tokyo-based electronics giant said net profit came in at JPY 116.0 billion (roughly Rs. 6,259 crores) in the first half of its fiscal year, reversing a JPY 109.2 billion loss a year earlier.
Sony also reversed a year-earlier operating loss although sales ticked down 0.3 percent to JPY  3.7 trillion. Sony's operating profit for July-September came to JPY 88 billion (roughly Rs. 4,753 crores), slightly above the JPY 87.3 billion average estimate of nine analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters. In the same quarter last year, it booked a loss of JPY 85.6 billion.
The quarterly operating profit from strong video game sales helped to offset a fall in smartphone sales and as the year-ago quarter had seen a big impairment charge.
Sony has been emerging from a painful corporate restructuring that has included layoffs and asset sales, with executives focusing on its upbeat video game unit and turning around a long-struggling television division.
A sharp decline in the value of the yen has given a lift to some of Japan's best-known exporters, including Sony, as it made them more competitive overseas and inflated their repatriated profits.
But Sony has struggled in the consumer electronics business that built its global brand, including losing billions of dollars in televisions over the past decade as it faced fierce competition from lower-cost rivals from South Korea and Taiwan.
The upbeat earnings Thursday come a day after Sony said it would acquire Toshiba's image sensor business.
The deal could boost Sony's position as a global leader in image sensors, which are key components in smartphones and other mobile devices.

Apps News Skype Apps for Android and iOS Updated With Video Filters and More

Microsoft has rolled out an update to Skype's Android, iPhone, and iPad apps to add a shiny new feature. Users with any of the said clients will be able to add video message filters. In case you're wondering, yes, it is indeed similar to Snapchat's recently rolled out video filters.
Users will now be able to add filters such as balloons and ghosts to their video messages. The option appears at the bottom left of the video message window. "Add balloons to your video message to celebrate any occasion. If you're feeling goofy, change the appearance of your face to make it look rounder or longer - we love this one!" Skype team wrote in a blog post.
The feature is similar to the additions Snapchat introduced in its app last month. The video-centred ephemeral messenger added lenses, trophies, and paid replays to its app. Using these features, users were able to take a selfie and then choose face filters, and add awards icons to the images.
Additionally, the team has also added support for 3D Touch in its Skype app for iPhone. Users with aniPhone 6s or an iPhone 6s Plus will now be able to force touch the Skype icon and see search and calling options in the contextual menu without having to open the app. In addition, inside the app, users can get a peek into conversations and video chats.
Separately, at an event in New Delhi, the company announced that it will be adding Bollywood content to Skype Mojis. For those unfamiliar, Mojis is a feature that the company introduced in Skype last month. Using this, users are able to add short clips of their favourite movies and TV shows right into a Skype chat. The company said that it has partnered with Yash Raj Films and Eros Now to get content. The company says that it will also add several India-centric emoticons.
Skype is in an interesting spot right now. On one hand, it is seemingly losing relevance in the aggressively growing instant messaging market, but on another, it holds the tentpole position in the enterprise space. In the recent months, it has ostensibly grown interest to make its instant messaging client appealing to the younger audience. A recent example of it is the upcoming Dialer app, an India-optimised Skype app we exclusively reported about earlier this month.

LG Profit Sinks as Smartphone Business Suffers Loss

LG Electronics said Thursday its mobile communications division suffered its first operating loss in more than a year, dragging down the company's overall earnings for the third quarter.
The mobile business lost KRW 77.6 billion (roughly Rs. 443 crores) for the July-September quarter. The South Korean company's overall net income sank 48 percent over a year earlier to KRW 83.7 billion, far below the KRW 146.5 billion forecast in survey of analyst by financial data provider FactSet.
LG said it shipped 15 million smartphones during the quarter but its smartphones could not command high prices. The company said its mobile business will likely improve its performance during the current quarter as it began sales of the LG V10 smartphone and the Nexus 5X smartphone.
LG's TV business turned profitable for the first time in three quarters.
Its home appliance business, which makes washing machines and refrigerators, contributed more than 80 percent of overall profit.
Sales fell 5 percent to KRW 14 trillion. Operating profit slumped 37 percent to KRW 294 billion.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 Pro Reportedly Passes China Certification

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 Pro Reportedly Passes China Certification

xiaomi_mobiles_reuters_2.jpg
The unannounced Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 Pro, which earlier this week was leaked in couple of images, has now been certified in China. Some other Xiaomi-branded gears are also spotted in database listing.
The 3C certification in China, spotted by Timesnews UK, shows smartphones with model numbers 2015617, 2015611, and 2015056, which might be the variants of Redmi Note 2 Pro. As per the report, the smartphone's certification in China suggests it could launch as soon as next month. However, nothing is confirmed as of yet. Xiaomi has not mentioned anything about the handset or hinted towards its existence.
Over the week, two leaked images of the unannounced Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 Pro also surfaced the Web. The handset is said to arrive in two variants. While one would house a fingerprint sensor on the back panel below the rear camera, the other variant would completely miss out on the particular feature. The Redmi Note 2 Pro is tipped to share the same specifications as the Redmi Note 2. The only difference would be an inclusion of a fingerprint sensor and a metal build.
For reference, the Redmi Note 2 features a 5.5-inch full-HD display, an octa-core MediaTek MT6795 SoC clocked at 2.2GHz clubbed with PowerVR G6200 GPU and 2GB RAM, a 13-megapixel rear camera, a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, and a 3060mAh battery.
Another handset dubbed Redmi 2 Pro earlier this week passed the US FCC certification website The Redmi 2 Pro appears to be the US variant of a recently launched Xiaomi phone, the Redmi 2 Prime, launched in India back in August. It features almost identical specifications, except for network support. It features 4G LTE (supports bands 2, 4, and 7), 3G, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n (2.4GHz) connectivity features as well.

Huawei Appoints Former Apple Creative Director as Chief UX Designer

Huawei Appoints Former Apple Creative Director as Chief UX Designer

Huawei's Android skin - Emotion UI - might soon look like Apple's iOS. The Chinese conglomerate has hired Abigail Brody, former Apple creative director as its chief user experience designer.
The Chinese telecommunications giant, currently the third largest smartphone manufacturer by volume, said that Brody will be working in the company's device and consumer division, and oversee the interface design on Huawei lineup of products. The Chinese company will create a design studio in the United States.
"Based on our plan, Huawei is going to set up a user experience design studio in the US, tracking and leading pioneering design concepts in the industry, working with China's domestic design teams to provide the best user experience of Huawei's ultimate products," a translation of the company's official statement reads, courtesy CNBC. According to Brody's LinkedIn profile, she joined the company in September.
Brody left Apple in January 2011 after working at the company for almost 10 years. In her stay, she worked on the design of a range of products including and especially the first iPhone and the first software version of iOS, and iCloud, including cloud-based solution for photos, documents, apps, notes, and calendar.
"Assigned by the Apple executive team, Abigail played a key role in creating new projects as individual design contributor, from inception and prototyping, through formal proposal, executive review for funding, to development and launch, e.g. for the iPhone's iOS1, aspects of Mac OS X and Aperture," her LinkedIn notes.
Her profile reveals that she has also held the role for vice president of global design for eBay andPayPal between December 2010 and October 2012. Huawei, which already has a global presence, was at the limelight of attention for launching the Nexus 6P, which it has manufactured. Earlier this month, the company also became the top Android shipper in China, surpassing Xiaomi.

Google Updates Docs, Sheets, Slides, Keep, Photos, and Snapseed Apps

Google has updated a range of its Android apps. The company has added new features and improvements to its productivity apps: Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Keep, as well as image apps: Photos, and Snapseed.
There are times when you don't want to remember certain people. Google Photos realises a need of this. Photos, which has been updated to version 1.8 on Android, allows users to hide a specific person from showing up under People section. Doing this will also hide the person from appearing in the "Rediscover this day" Assistant section. Google says that it will roll out these features to Photos' iOS and Web clients soon.
Moving along, Snapseed app is finally getting support for RAW photo editing. The v2.1 of the free image editor, unlike other apps with similar functionality, now offers an easier way to edit RAW files, providing you with the tools to control exposure, highlights, temperature, and more. The features have not yet reached the iOS version of the app.
In the Sheets app, users will now be able to view more content on the screen. The app now automatically hides toolbars and headers to give more screen space to the content. But don't worry, the handy toolbars and headers can be brought back to the screen by scrolling through or zooming around the document. Additionally, Sheets app is now also able to offer filters that were previously applied on the Web, and offer the option to paste only values, and formatting among other attributes.
Slides, moving forward, now allows users to hyperlink text and shapes. It also allows users to create superscript and subscript text. Google Docs is also getting this feature. Google Keep, the note-takingapp, now allows users to draw on notes. Currently available on Android, the new features will be rolling out the iOS apps soon. Notably, the new features in Google Docs and Slides have already arrived on iOS.

Home | Mobiles | Mobiles News Apple Opens Its First Stores in the Middle East in the Emirates

Apple opened its first retail stores in the Middle East on Thursday in the luxury malls of the United Arab Emirates, hoping to sell wealthy consumers on their new high-end smartwatches.
Apple's two new stores, at Dubai's Mall of the Emirates and Abu Dhabi's Yas Mall, find themselves alongside other global luxury brands like Emporio Armani, Fendi and Burberry. And that's no accident, industry watchers say, as Apple wants to give wealthy consumers hands-on experience with its new Apple Watch line, with some of the high-tech timepieces costing as much as $17,000 (roughly Rs. 11,00,000).
"Apple is trying to position itself, with the watch in particular, as a fashion brand - and a premium fashion brand," said Daniel Gleeson, a senior analyst at IHS. "It is looking to be part of that company alongside Burberry and Armani. ... So moving into that retail slot next to them is not surprising."
The Apple stores in the Emirates have the sleek, modern look of many of the company's other 464 retail shops around the world. At the Mall of the Emirates, 60-foot (18-meter) glass panels open up into a showroom with ficus trees and a skylight. The Apple Watch is displayed prominently.
In a nod to cultural norms in the Muslim country, staff will hold women-only workshops with customers, said Wendy Beckman, a senior retail director at Apple. Beckman gave a presentation to journalists at the Dubai store on Tuesday and refused to take questions.
Apple Inc., based in Cupertino, California, has focused its attention outside of the Middle East since beginning its retail operations in 2001. Resellers and gray-market stores filled the gap for years, with most new iPhones regularly available from mall kiosks across Dubai soon after their US release, sometimes with US mobile phone carrier SIM cards still inside them.
In February 2014, Apple CEO Tim Cook visited Dubai and met with its ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. While specifics of their discussion weren't released, Cook later visited Dubai Mall, raising speculation that Apple would enter a market already home to high-end retail spaces and deep-pocketed consumers.
Van Baker, an analyst at US-based tech research firm Gartner Inc., said the move into the Emirates made sense for Apple.
"They tend to expand into new markets only when they are prepared to commit sufficient resources to the region to have a real presence," Baker said. "I suspect that these two stores will be followed shortly by additional stores in the Arab world - assuming the initial two stores are well received."
The stores' opening comes as Apple reported another quarter of record earnings Tuesday, boosted by strong sales in China despite fears of slowing consumer demand for smartphones worldwide as more and more people already own one. In the Emirates, 67 percent of all mobile phones used are smartphones, according to the government's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority.
While the iPhone 6 is the most commonly used model of mobile phone in the Emirates, with a 4.9 percent market share, South Korea's Samsung Electronics has become the most common brand with 32.6 percent of the market, according to the government. Microsoft Corp.'s Nokia mobile phones follow closely behind with a 31.5 percent share of the market while Apple ranks third with 14.2 percent.
Still, the arrival of the Apple stores this week saw Samsung's local reseller take out a massive newspaper advertisement announcing their own "reopening." But Apple's focus remains on high-end, high-spending consumers, like those willing to pay an average of $670 for an iPhone rather than buying another brand's $200 smartphone, Gleeson said.
"Having an extensive retail presence, where you're able to cater to that type of clientele that would be paying that type of money, is an absolute necessity for Apple," Gleeson said. "I think it makes a lot of sense for Apple to have that retail presence in the region now, particularly when it's looking to sell the Apple Watch there."
Terms of the Apple store openings in the Emirates aren't clear. Typically, foreign companies operating in the country's seven emirates partner with a local firm. However, there have been reports Apple negotiated a 100 percent stake in its retail sales.
Apple declined to say whether it had a local partner for its stores. Neither lists any local partner information near the store entrance, common practice for shops in the Emirates. The country's Economy Ministry and Arab Business Machine Ltd., which describes itself as Apple's official Mideast reseller, did not respond to requests for comment.

Samsung Galaxy A5 Successor Purportedly Passes Bluetooth SIG Certification

samsung_man_reuters.jpg
The anticipated successor of the Samsung Galaxy A5 has reportedly been certified by the Bluetooth SIG authority.
The Bluetooth certification image shared by NapiDroid website (via Phonearena), shows nothing more than the Bluetooth 4.1 support for the handset and the model number SM-A510F/DS. It is worth noting that the model number of the existing Samsung Galaxy A5 smartphone was SM-A500.
The SM-A510F/DS was spotted last week on Zauba, an Indian import and export tracker. As per the listing, the smartphone features a 5.2-inch display. Notably, Samsung has not yet mentioned anything about the smartphone yet.
bluetooth_sig_galaxy_a5_successor_napidroid.jpg
It is also worth noting that the successors of the Galaxy A7 and Galaxy A3 smartphones were spotted at the GFXBench benchmark test earlier this week. While the next-gen Galaxy A7 comes with a SM-A710 model number, the Galaxy A3 successor sports a SM-A310 model number.
According to the benchmark listing, the successor Samsung Galaxy A3 successor aka SM-A310 will feature a 4.7-inch HD (720x1280 pixels) display and will be powered by an Exynos 7580 quad-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz coupled with 1.5GB of RAM. The Galaxy A3 bears 16GB of inbuilt storage, and the smartphone sports a 13-megapixel rear camera alongside a 5-megapixel front camera.
The SM-A710 aka Samsung Galaxy A7 successor, on the other hand, is seen featuring a 5.5-inch full-HD (1080x1920 pixels) display. Under the hood, the handset is powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 615 processor clocked at 1.5GHz with 3GB of RAM. The handset is listed to pack the same inbuilt storage and camera modules as the SM-A310.

Moto X Force With 5.4-Inch 'Shatterproof' QHD Display Launched

Motorola on Thursday launched the Moto X Force, the international variant of the recently unveiledMotorola Droid Turbo 2 for Verizon Wireless. Motorola says the smartphone would be arriving in the UK, as well as the Latin America, EMEA, and APAC regions in November.

The Motorola Moto X Force is identical to its Verizon Wireless counterpart, except for network support. The version listed on the company's UK site features support for India's 4G LTE bands as well. The smartphone will be eligible for the company's Moto Maker customisation program where applicable.

Making the announcement on its UK blog, the company has detailed a GBP 499 (roughly Rs. 49,900) price tag for the 32GB variant, and a GBP 534 (roughly Rs. 53,400) price tag for the 64GB variant.

(Also seeMotorola Moto X Force vs. Motorola Droid Turbo 2)

The Moto X Force comes with a 5.4-inch QHD (1440x2560) display. The company claims that the 'ShatterShield' display - which is made of an aluminium rigid core, flexible Amoled screen, and dual-layer touchscreen panels (redundancy in case one goes bad) - wouldn't break into pieces even when dropped on a slab of concrete. The smartphone also comes with water-repellent nano-coating.

moto_x_force_shatterproof_fall.jpgThe smartphone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 octa-core SoC clocked at 2GHz and paired with 3GB of LPDDR4 RAM. As mentioned above, it comes in 32GB and 64GB inbuilt storage options, with both variants bearing a microSD card slot (up to 2TB). There's a 3760mAh battery onboard, which in addition to a claimed battery life of 2-days with "mixed use", also supports Quick Charging.

On the photography front, the handset comes with a 21-megapixel rear-camera with an f/2.0 aperture and dual-LED flash and Phase Detect Autofocus, apart from a 5-megapixel front-facing shooter with flash and an f/2.0 aperature.

In terms of software, the new Motorola smartphone runs Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, and not Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The single-SIM capable Moto X Force supports 4G LTE (Cat. 4), 3G, CDMa, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, and other standard connectivity options.

Google Parent Alphabet May Open Units to China: Report

Google parent Alphabet may do business in China following the reorganization of the technology giant, co-founder Sergey Brin said in an interview Thursday.
Brin, who is president of Alphabet, told the Wall Street Journal that the new organizational structure would allow each unit autonomy on the matter.
"Each Alphabet business can make its own decisions on which countries to operate in," Brin was quoted as saying.
"We already do quite a lot of business in China, although it has not been an easy country for us."
Google ended most operations in China in 2010 in a dispute over censorship and an attack on Gmail users.
It does sell ads to businesses in China, but Google services are not officially available in the country.
Earlier this month, Google bought a stake in Chinese artificial intelligence startup Mobvoi which is aiming to develop smart wearable technologies. The two firms previously announced an agreement earlier this year to bring the Google Android Wear operating system to China.
Google in August announced its plan to reshape under the newly formed parent company.
The move gives the tech giant more ability to focus on its core business, while offering startup-like flexibility to long-shot, trailblazing projects.
Alphabet will be the corporate parent, overseeing the Google unit for search and a handful of other operating firms created for projects in health, Internet delivery, investment and research.

Qualcomm Says Snapdragon 820 SoC Overheating Rumours Are False

A report from earlier this week claimed that Samsung is working on heating issues of the Snapdragon 820 SoC, looking to use it for its Galaxy S7 smartphone. Qualcomm on Thursday came out to refute that claim.
The US-based semiconductor company in an emailed statement to Gadgets 360 on Thursday said, "The rumours circulating in the media regarding Snapdragon 820 performance are false. The Snapdragon 820 improves on all IP blocks and is fabricated in the second generation of the 14nm process technology. It is meeting all of our specifications. But more importantly it is satisfying the thermal and performance specifications from our OEMs." It posted the same statement on its Weibo page as well. Samsung has not yet commented anything on the matter.
The report by Business Korea claimed that Samsung is currently looking to modify the processor's control program to deal with the heat issues, and if that doesn't work, it would build a radiating pipe inside the rumoured Galaxy S7 to limit the SoC's overheating. Although Samsung has the option to include its own home-brewed Exynos SoC in the handset, the report states that the company has decided to incorporate the unannounced SoC in its Galaxy S7 "at all costs." Interestingly, Samsung will reportedly be manufacturing the chips in its own foundries.
To recall, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor was in the news since late last year for its overheating issues. Qualcomm since that time has done its best to rubbish reports. The LG G Flex 2was the first smartphone to incorporate the SoC. The company later confirmed it faced some heating problems with the processor but was able to implement a fix.
Sony also confirmed the problem in its recent Xperia Z3+. HTC's One M9 was also reported to be suffering from overheating issues due to the chipset, but the problem was later fixed with a software update.
Separately, Xiaomi said it had worked with Qualcomm to create a customised v2.1 of the Snapdragon 810 processor to optimise it for the Mi Note Pro. Qualcomm also worked with OnePlus for the Snapdragon 810 v2.1, which debuted with OnePlus 2.
